Coimbatore city shortly called as “Kovai” is located in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The city is situated on the banks of the river Noyyal. Coimbatore District is surrounded by Erode district in its north, Dindigul district in its east, the Nilgiris in its west and southwest side. It shares part of its boundary with the neighboring state of Kerala to the south west.
The district is filled with naturally diverse eco system such as hills, plains, forests, evergreen fields, drought prone areas, river bodies and tanks. Situated at the foot hills of Nilgiris, it is known for its pleasant climate, peaceful atmosphere, cosmopolitan outlook and private enterprise. Located in the vicinity of the Nilgiri hills give Coimbatore a pleasant climate that is much cooler than the coastal regions of Tamil Nadu.

The climate of Coimbatore city is moderate and pleasant throughout the year with little temperature variation between the seasons. Summers are hot with the mercury reaching to 39°C, the dip in the summer to as low as 23°C. In winter the climate is mild with the maximum temperature hovering around 33°C and the minimum temperature rarely going below 21°C. Coimbatore being in Tamil Nadu, does not receive rain during South-west (June to September) monsoon season, that's why it is known as "Rain Shadow Area".

Coimbatore experiences rains in October-November, which is brought about by the retreating monsoons/post monsoon season (North-Eastern monsoon). Although these rainfalls are not enough for the entire year, small rivers like Siruvani and Atthikadavu fulfill water need of the city.
