Coimbatore City

Coimbatore city shortly called as “Kovai” is located in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The city is situated on the banks of the river Noyyal. Coimbatore District is surrounded by Erode district in its north, Dindigul district in its east, the Nilgiris in its west and southwest side. It shares part of its boundary with the neighboring state of Kerala to the south west.

The district is filled with naturally diverse eco system such as hills, plains, forests, evergreen fields, drought prone areas, river bodies and tanks. Situated at the foot hills of Nilgiris, it is known for its pleasant climate, peaceful atmosphere, cosmopolitan outlook and private enterprise. Located in the vicinity of the Nilgiri hills give Coimbatore a pleasant climate that is much cooler than the coastal regions of Tamil Nadu.

It is an important textile-manufacturing center in India, also known as the 'Manchester of South India'. There are hundreds of textile mills in and around Coimbatore apart from a number of other manufacturing units. Kovai is one of the fastest growing cities in India. Cotton textiles, electric motors, pumps, automobile spares, iron steel and steel castings are major exports from Kovai. There are more than 25,000 large and tiny industries and textile mills. No wonder it is rightly called the Manchester of South India. Coimbatore is also famous for the manufacture of motor pumps and varied engineering goods. Coimbatore city is a part of the Coimbatore circuit covering Coimbatore, Mettupalayam and Ooty. The important places to visit in Kovai are the Botanical Garden, the Agricultural College Museum, Black thunder theme park and the V.O Chidambram Park.

How to get Coimbatore?

Air

Coimbatore has a domestic airport which has regular flights from Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calicut, Chennai, Cochin, Hyderabad, Mumbai, New Delhi and Sharjah. Air Sahara, Indian Airlines, Air Deccan and Jet Airways operate flights out of Coimbatore Airport. Coimbatore Airport is approximately 10 kilometers from the center of the city.

Rail

Coimbatore is well connected with near by state capitals and cities in the country through a well laid out railway network. Coimbatore is a major railway junction on the Southern Railways and has trains to Chennai, Rameswaram, Madurai, Bangalore, Mumbai, Kanyakumari, Kozhikode, Mettupalayam, Kochi and Delhi. In India, most of the express and mail trains have facilities of air conditioned comfort.

Road

Coimbatore is well connected through a network of national/ State highways. State roadways buses regularly play from Coimbatore to various towns and cities. Coimbatore is connected by road with all major places in South India. For local transportation, city buses, taxis and auto rickshaws are available. State Transport Corporation plays mini luxury coaches between various points in the city and airport.
